Programma Coffee Trail

The following is the outline itinerary for the Coffee Trail. Please note the itinerary may change depending on local weather conditions and the riding abilities of your group but always with your best interest in mind.

Day One

Arrive in Sao Paulo and transfer to Fazenda Nova. Settle in to your room and explore the farm. Depending on the time of your arrival, there may be a short introductory ride to acquaint you with your horse and the surrounding area.

Dinner and overnight at Fazenda Nova.

Day Two

After breakfast, explore the 120 acre farm horseback. Today, make your first contact with the Atlantic Rainforest; if you look closely you may be lucky enough to spot monkey or deer.

Dinner and overnight at Fazenda Nova.

Day Three

Leave Fazenda Nova behind and ride through eucalyptus forests, cornfields, dairy farms and beetroot plantations until you reach Fazenda Figueira, where a picnic lunch will be waiting for you.

At Fazenda Figueira coffee is grown, but the owners also breed Mangalarga Paulistas, a Brazilian saddle horse. Have lunch in the milking parlour whilst your horses rest in the shade. After lunch, the trail winds its way through large coffee plantations and orange groves.

Your overnight stop is Fazenda Serra de Santa Monica, an old coffee plantation house that is being restored.

Dinner and overnight at Fazenda Serra de Santa Monica.

Day Four

After breakfast ride north, crossing sugar cane plantations and small ranches. Cross the River Canoas into the state of Minas Gerais. Journey through this undulating landscape and pause at the top of a hill for a wonderful view of the area. Have a picnic lunch in the foothills of the Pedra Branca. Near your picnic spot are walls built by slaves in times gone by. Return to Fazenda Serra de Santa Monica by a different route.

Dinner and overnight at Fazenda Serra de Santa Monica.

Day Five

After breakfast, ride across cattle farms until you reach Fazenda Bocaina. This farm has preserved much of its original forest and now breeds fowl, sheep and dairy cows. Pass two historic coffee farms which are still in the throes of renovation. It is a very pretty ride this afternoon, the hillsides are covered with coffee plants and at the top of the hills there are lovely views to enjoy on a clear day. Your journey on horseback today ends at Fazenda Santa Antonio. Here your host will tell you about how the farm’s coffee is grown in an agro-forestry system. Later, have the opportunity of tasting this delicious ‘forest coffee’ for yourself.

Dinner and overnight at Fazenda Santa Antonio.

Day Six

Today’s ride takes you to Fazenda Fortaleza. En route, ride near the village of Igarai and cross the Sao Bento coffee plantation, which has an ecumenical church. Lunch is at Fazenda Fortaleza. In the afternoon there will be the chance to learn about the coffee growing methods of this plantation, take a walk through the organic vegetable garden or perhaps walk along the farm’s sandy tracks and woodland paths to an ancient Jequitiba tree.

Return to Fazenda Santa Antonio for dinner and to overnight.

Day Seven

Breakfast and then a short ride in the surrounding area, after which the horses are loaded on to the truck which takes them home to Fazenda Nova. Lunch is back at Fazenda Nova. Say goodbye to your hosts and the staff that have helped you along the way.

Transfer to Sao Paulo for your flight back to the UK or continue with your holiday in Brazil.

Centre Based Ride

A centre based option is also possible for more novice riders. Ride for approximately four hours a day in and around Fazenda Nova. You may choose to have lessons if you wish. We recommend a stay of at least three nights and the suggested maximum stay would be five nights.
